The year 2007 quickly came and is almost gone and the New Year will bring forth new challenges for our Township.
During 2007, the Thompson Bridge was replaced through shared funding with the Federal and Provincial governments. Go take a look at the new bridge( end of Joduin Road)to see how Council worked with the engineers, contractors and neighbours to retain the quiet rural atmosphere and be environmentally friendly. Upgrades were completed on Jodouin Road, Belanger Road and the intersection at Papineau and Chenier Roads reconstructed in preparation for future work. Special pipes were ordered and preparations made for the replacement of the culverts on Earl's Lake Road over Earl's creek.
The Township was a participant in two free programs: 1. The Ministry of Natural Resources provided bear proof bins for those surrounding the landfill and other residents with bear problems 2. The Porchlight Program provided a free energy saving bulb for each household.
This year marked the fourth year of Pitch-In, a program to cleanup our community. Over 100 people participated making it a great success. Thanks to everyone of you!
The Township of Papineau-Cameron continues to participate in the Mattawa-Bonfield Economic Development Corporation, pursing new employers and jobs for the area. A new initiative for doctor recruitment has been spearheaded by the EDO. As Chair of the EDO, I assure you that any new ideas will be openly received to improve the local economy.
The Township is close to meeting its commitment of $200,000 funding support for the new Mattawa Hospital, ensuring that the health needs of our community are met. All residents are encouraged to support the development of the new hospital, by any donation, large or small. If Mattawa does not have a hospital or schools, we cannot attract new development.
Members of Council welcome input from all ratepayers - the door is always open!
Yours truly,
Mayor Robert Corriveau
